Celeb Twitter Round-Up: It’s Over for “Gqeberha: The Empire”

Well, yet another soapie has been kicked to the curb – this time, it’s “Gqeberha: The Empire”.

Making its debut on Mzansi Magic in January 2023 as a replacement for “The Queen”, this television production – which follows the powerful Mxenge family that resides in Gqeberha, Eastern Cape – ran for only two seasons before it got the chop.

“We extend our heartfelt thanks to the producers, cast and crew of ‘Gqeberha: The Empire’,” said Shirley Adonisi, director of local entertainment channels at M-Net. “Their unwavering dedication and exceptional talent have delivered spellbinding storylines in one of the most fiercely competitive prime time slots.

“As we approach the grand finale, we eagerly anticipate witnessing the culmination of this extraordinary journey.”

Clearly, the storylines were not “spellbinding” enough to draw in viewers. As a result, these low viewing figures allegedly prompted the folks at M-Net to boot the soapie.

Over on Twitter/X, fans shared their thoughts on the cancellation, and many were in agreement that the show just got boring, and that it should’ve stopped after two seasons as the writing got worse and worse:

A few lamented the job losses incurred from the canning, as well as the cast’s talents being wasted:

Others just shook their heads at yet another show being culled:

It’s sad to see another local production like “Gqeberha: The Empire” go, especially when it affects the livelihood of its cast members and crew. On the other hand, it’s clear that viewers are tired of seeing the same formula being played out again and again on their screens, and that new writers and producers need to be brought in to shake things up.

What do you folks think of “Gqeberha: The Empire” getting canned? Let us know!
